Crafts and craftsmanship

Good craftsmanship delights me to no end. It could be divine and it could be orgasmic, depending on who believes what. Be it some intricate woodcarving, or some refined piece of cutlery, a souvenir at a touristy place, or some well made lampshade, it could be anything from anywhere. I want to own it, I want to be able to afford it, I want to reward the artisan for it, and more often than note, I want to be able to make it myself. And God knows, how many times I have lead myself astray into some far nooks and corners of the exploration world, in myriad rabbitholes, in quest to be able to do something of that sort myself.

Whatever one believes, whether it is some genetic, inborn talent or an acquired one. Whether Goddesses smiled upon the artisan or some magical pixie dust worked for them, there is a creative power associated with the crafts, and being able to make something is something which no one can take away from a person.

Not only it is a matter of form, function, design and a well thought process, it is also an expression of the craftsman’s personality and its evolution. It is a journey without an end, and probably the journey is what it is all about.

Very late in my career, I developed a love and appreciation of being able to code. Otherwise a mundane something which had to be done, I really want to deliver something really good. Something well thought of, well designed, something beautiful. Even if no one is going to read the code, it gives me delight to strive to write something beautiful, something which will endure. I believe it is my deep desire to be a good craftsman, which gets expressed here. And which is why, I have been very open to learn new tricks of the trade, new programming languages, new technologies and stacks itself. Something which I aspire and hope to continue for a long time.

And in the meanwhile, I plan to keep learning other crafts of the world, the ones in traditional sense, the ones which got me triggered for the first time, the ones which I have always wanted to master.
